I love you because you did just that. Let’s get started discussing this online job in Kenya i.e drop shipping

What is Drop shipping?

Dropshipping is an online business model which you can use to run an online store of your own without ever holding any inventory. Once you’ve made a sale your supplier will ship your products from their warehouse, straight to your customer’s doorstep. You’ll never need to worry about storing, packaging, or shipping your products.

In this online business model, you will meet three key players. The first one is the Supplier who owns the product. The second is the retailer (you) who is responsible for advertising and making orders and finally the client.

If you happen to start a drop-shipping business today, I know you will after reading this post. remember to bookmark it so that you will come to it later for reference. You will get product images from the wholesaler (supplier) and share them online. You will tag your own prices (should be higher than that of the supplier). And then, promote the products and when you make a sale, keep the profits and send the order to your wholesaler.   It is the responsibility of the wholesaler to ensure your client receives the ordered item.

Are you getting me well? I mean, does this make sense to you? I want you to keep reading to understand the key aspects here before you can venture into this business. Okay, so drop-shipping almost resembles affiliate marketing but it isn’t at all. Let’s look at their differences.

Drop shipping vs Affiliate Marketing

Dropshipping involves the supplier, the dropshipping store, and the customer. The customer orders a product from the dropshipping store. The dropshipping store transfers the details of the customer to the supplier. The supplier then ships the product to the customer. The dropshipping store makes a profit by selling the product at a higher price.

For example, if the price of the product on wholesale is $100, the dropshipping store can sell it for $150 to $250 making a commission of $50 or $150 easily.

On the other hand, in affiliate marketing, the affiliate sells the products of the company that s/he is marketing for at a set commission. There are many online programs available for affiliate marketing such as Getresponse,  Jumia, and amazon but the commission is usually set by the company whose products the affiliate (you) is selling. Unlike Dropshipping, the marketer doesn’t have the liberty of setting his/ her own prices.

The good thing is that both of these are profitable, free to start, and people can make a career in both types of eCommerce marketing models with some ‘hard work’ at launch.

Benefits of Dropshipping business in Kenya

To be sincere with you, dropshipping is one … actually a top paying online business model that I would recommend to anyone that is business-oriented. Think of this in a minute. You are in Kenya and got clients around the east African community; you get a wholesaler in Uganda- Kampala with quality products that is ready to ship within east Africa.

So yours is to take orders and payments from clients and then you keep your profits and send the wholesale amount to the wholesaler and the delivery address plus recipient. I guess you already are smelling how much profits you could be making right?

In a very quick list, let me tell you some of the advantages of starting a dropshipping business in Kenya:

Minimum or no risk:- In any case of financial constraints, you can exit the market without any losses. (I don’t mean you scam customers and exit business. that is not dropshipping. It’s good to be ethical.)

Low start-up cost:- Depending on your approach, you could start with only an internet connection. But if you are serious about this model then it ould cost you not more than Ksh. 17,000 to get started.

Convenience:- You do not have to worry about packaging, delivery, and inventory. All that is catered for by the wholesaler. You also can work with multiple wholesalers at once.

Easy to scale up:- Since a dropshipping store does not require any physical location to store products, you can easily expand your online business plus easily switch to more profitable products in case what you have aren’t selling much.

Drawbacks of Dropshipping Model

I just learned that on earth nothing and nobody do not have a drawback. We only settle for what has more or outruling advantages than the other. Now let’s also look at what disadvantages the drop shipping business comes with on the table.

Competition is high:- Almost all eCommerce businesses have high competition. The high competition can become a problem for dropshippers who aren’t too careful about the way they market their products. New stores pop up every day because it is very easy to duplicate and they will copy your store code by code. That’s why changing strategies, and keeping above the trends is the only way you can keep yourself ahead within the competition.

Low-profit margins:- Most drop shippers tend to simply give up because the profit margins are too low. However, if you look closely at it, dropshipping isn’t a short-term business. It is all about staying in the game and moving up the ladder one step at a time. Think about how you can turn lower profit margins into huge ones? Sell more products.

Handling orders may be strenuous:– One place where most drop shippers will pull their hair is when one of their products goes viral. They will then have hundreds of orders to fulfill. Managing orders can be a strenuous task. But thanks to the many dropshipping plugins available, this is not a major problem now. (Scroll down to have a look at the cool plugins)

Complete liability to products refund:- Dropshipping is one business where you will be selling a product that you haven’t actually seen. Therefore, chances of product failure are high. When that happens the whole responsibility of returning the actual amount to the customer and returning the product to the supplier lies on you.

But this doesn’t mean that you start to panic. Instead, devise a 7 to 30-day refund policy in which the customer can return the product if (s)he is not satisfied with the purchase. The individual buyer will simply have to send the product back to the shipping address.

Note: This may cost shipping charges to the customer. Hence, you must ensure to clearly mention this clause in your return and refund policy.

With all these in mind, I think there is no better point than this to now take you through the process of starting your online dropshipping store. Let’s goooo!

How to Start a Dropshipping Store

First I want you to know that if you were born in Kenya and still live in Kenya, That does not restrict you to Kenyan customers only. You got the whole globe to sell to as a drop shipper.

The two major platforms on which a dropshipping store can be built are woo-commerce and Shopify. Woocomerce is free though may require some basic programming knowledge to tweak it so as to achieve your goals.

On the other hand, Shopify is an easy one for beginners who do not want to spend time coding or doing design. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately – you will have to part with at least Ksh 3,000 monthly or more to maintain your plan. Though it is worth it, to me I think for a business newbie, I rather you go the Woocomerce way.

There are a few more things you need to put together to have your store ready. They include:

1. Selecting Products for Dropshipping And supplier

In order to have a successful dropshipping store, you need to select products that are in demand. This is what we refer to as the niche of your store. What products will your store be selling most? electronics, phones, books, music, etc. There are multiple ways to select these kinds of products such as from websites like Product Mafia or Google Trends.

You should settle for products that have an upward trend in the google trend. Most of the time, the best strategy of selling a dropshipping product online is by testing what actually sells.

Also, searching on the wholesaler’s websites of top products could help you find top-selling products of that time. In this post, We will use AliExpress since that is our best-recommended wholesaler.

2. Selecting a Domain Name

A domain name is your online address such as onlinejobsinkenya.co.ke. When you are targetting a global audience then you should get a dot com (.com) domain name.

As a beginner, you will need to choose a domain name that resonates with the niche of your dropshipping store. Carefully select a name and then register the domain. Think about which type of drop shipper you are and then select a domain or a number of domains and then register them.

A domain name typically costs around $14.99 / year, and web hosting normally costs $7.99 / month.

That’s a lot of money for beginners who are just starting out.

Thankfully, Bluehost, an official WordPress recommended hosting provider, has agreed to offer our users a free domain name and over 60% off on web hosting.

You can get a free domain name registered for you at Bluehost. Just click here to proceed to Bluehost.

3. Selecting a Hosting Platform

Web hosting is where your website files live on the internet. It’s your drop shipping storehouse on the internet. Every dropshipping store needs web hosting

Bluehost is one of the oldest web hosting companies on the internet. They are also the largest brand name when it comes to WordPress hosting because they host millions of websites including our own.

On top of all this, Bluehost has been working with WordPress since 2005, and they are committed to giving back. That’s why they have promised us that if you cannot get your dropshipping store online within 30 minutes by following this tutorial, then our expert team will complete the process for you without any cost. They will compensate us, so you don’t have to. Contact us for free dropshipping store setup help.

We would get this commission for recommending just about any WordPress hosting company, but we only recommend products that we personally use and believe will add value to our readers.

Now that you have both your domain name and Webhosting with you, the next is to get a drop shipping plugin. And just before I forget to mention, with the Bluehost package you also get free WordPress installation. Isn’t that cool? let’s move to the next step.

4. Selecting a Dropshipping Plugin

Drop shipping is not a must to install dropshipping Plugins for you to get started. However, your setup process will involve cumbersome coding and take much of your time before you can have your dropshipping store set up and ready to make money from it.

Our best pick is the Alidropship plugin that is well made for woo-commerce, however, we have other dropship plugins such as Spocket dropshipping which you pay for $29 per month and works well with woo-commerce, WooDropship which is a free and open-source plugin. It works with woo-commerce only. And then there is the Dropified plugin; it is available for both Shopify and WooCommerce. Works the same way as Alidropship only that it has a monthly subscription plan starting at $44.

Ali dropship dedicated plugin will easily set up for you a fully functional dropshipping store in just a few clicks. You will get the plugin at a one-time price of $89. This plugin comes with the free woo-commerce plugin and tens of themes for you to choose from and build your dropship store.

Ifyou get this plugin, we put together a quick guide to help you install and set it up easily on your WordPress drop shipping website. Click here to read the exclusive guide

Hey, come back here… Okay, I know you also are like me who like to see varieties before settling for my taste. So what if you do not want to work with a website. Do we have Alternative methods? The answer is yes and below are our recommendations.

Alternative ways to launch a dropshipping business

Let’s do the maths; you need a domain name, Webhosting, and Alidropship plugin. let’s see the total:

Domain name-   Free

WebHosting  –  $34 (if you use our link here)

AliDropship   –  $67 (if you use our link here)

Total: $101 (Ksh. 11,000)

I understand someone somewhere will say that but I do not have that cash to get started Drop shipping. You could do this manually but the whole process is more cumbersome than you ever thought. You will burn out and exit business maybe before you make your first sale. Or, even if you make sales, managing and following up on orders plus transactions will cost you fatigue you have never imagined.

Therefore, instead of tabling what I know will hurt readers at OJIK, I would rather recommend you apply to become an affiliate, take translation jobs, Online writing jobs, jobs for students, and more others as you save capital to help you get started the right way in your dropshipping business in Kenya.

Does that make sense? if it does, then take a minute and share this post on Twitter and add trending hashtags so that more friends can also view this online job in Kenya and make money online.

I know you did just that and that’s why I love you. I promise to keep bringing to you more value.

Now that you have all you need to start an aliexpress drop shipping store and make money online. How do you start making that money? Definitely by selling the products. But to whom will you sell the products when dropshipping sites are launching almost daily globally. The secret is to promote your store.

How to Promote Your Dropshipping Store

    1. Promoting on Social Media:- Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are three platforms where people buy drop shipping products. You can include WhatsApp however, managing WhatsApp contacts is also another challenge.
    2. Plan Social Sharing:- Sharing your store link or a link to your products could increase your store conversion. However, it is good to note that Facebook and Instagram reduced the organic reach of posts to users unless you promote the post. A good way to go around this sickening act by meta is creating a Facebook group or using Instagram influencer marketing.
    3. Try Instagram Influencer Marketing:- Instagram influencers are those people who have made a following on their Instagram accounts through engaging content. To start influencer marketing, select a niche and then select influencers that have more engagement. They should have at least 5 comments or hearts on their posts
    4. Facebook Ads and Google Ads Are Powerful:- Facebook uses user information to deliver ads that resonate with their interests. Though the advertising is premium, it can boost your store since you can easily reach the targeted audience and increase returns. The same thing applies to Google ads. You however need to take some time to learn this art to avoid burning your fingers with ads.
    5. Email Marketing:- This is another way to market your drop shipping products. Email marketing requires you to have a list of people to who you can market. In comparison with paid ads, email marketing is much more complex because you don’t know the buyer’s intent. That’s why, in email marketing, people prefer to turn cold leads into warm leads by providing them with informational material.

Email marketing is usually done for remarketing purposes. This means that when you have collected the emails of all the buyers, you can upsell to them by emailing them of your new products. All this can be done through automation software.

Some effective software to use for email marketing includes GetResponse, AWeber, MailChimp, and Campaign Monitor. Among them all, Getresponse is our best pick because of its great automated features and real-time customers support. You also get the first 30 days free to use if you use our link. Click here to create a Free getresponse account.

AWeber is a cheap alternative to Getresponse though I really dislike its interface and the learning curve. However, if you use our link to create an account you will get a free account plus the first 500 emails subscribers will receive emails for free. Thereafter, you can pay a small monthly subscription fee.

AliExpress Alternatives in Dropshipping

AliExpress is one estore that helps Chinese manufacturers sell their products directly to customers around the world. But, honestly, it is at the core of the dropshipping business as well. Because most drop shippers directly take products from AliExpress and sell at a higher margin at their own stores.

What if a particular product that you want to dropship on your own store gets out of stock on AliExpress? Or, what if the product you want to sell is not available on AliExpress? These are times when you start searching for alternatives because your customers are waiting for their products to arrive on time. It’s time-sensitive.

Now let me save you time and effort. below are some alternatives. However, you need to do a bit of research on pricing just before you settle for a product from these stores because some of them still get their products from AliExpress.

1. DHGate

Here, you can get almost anything that is available on AliExpress. However, the prices will be a little high. For example, one product that costs $7 on AliExpress may cost $10 on DHGate. So, do your research and then purchase.

2. DealExtreme

Next, we have DealExtreme. It doesn’t have as big an inventory as DHGate but if you are looking for electrical/mechanical products, DealExtreme is a good alternative.

3. BangGood

BangGood is an eCommerce store, not a manufacturer marketplace. So, the prices are higher than other AliExpress alternatives. Consider it your only go-to destination when you don’t have any other alternative available.

4. TomTop

TomTop has an inventory of around 100,000 products. It is a good alternative if you are looking for geeky and tech products. What we liked about this estore was its selective product catalog. You won’t find anything useless in this eCommerce store. For us, it is a worthy AliExpress alternative.
